Descriptions of the data in each subdirectory are given to facilitate understanding of this model archive. Files descriptions are provided for select files to provide additional information that may be of use for understanding this model archive. Two model data sets are archived for this groundwater study—a modified version of the RASA model and the Great Egg-Mullica local model. A larger groundwater flow model of the New Jersey Coastal Plain, the RASA (Regional Aquifer System Analysis) model, provides the boundary flows for the smaller, more refined, local model of the Great Egg Harbor and Mullica River Basins. The RASA model files and the local model files are compatible with MODFLOW-2000 (the U.S. Geological Survey modular finite-difference ground-water flow model), the most recent version of MODFLOW at the time this model was developed (Harbaugh and others, 2000). Simulations for the RASA model were run with MODFLOW-2000 version 1.19.1. Simulations for the local model were run with MODFLOW-2000 version 1.18.1. Both version of MODFLOW-2000 are archived in the 'source' directory. Model-input data sets for the calibration run and model scenarios for both the RASA model and the Great Egg-Mullica (GEM) model that are described in USGS SIR 2012-5187 are included in the archive. The GEM model (the local model) was nested within the regional New Jersey Coastal Plain model—RASA model. The RASA model well files were updated with the increased withdrawals reflected in each of the simulations for the local model. The RASA model was run and the resulting flows and heads were used to provide boundary flows for the local model. All of the files needed to run the RASA model, as well as the GEM model, are listed below. The model was run on the Windows Server 2009 Edition (64-bit) operating system (Service Pack 1). Support is provided for correcting errors in the data release and clarification of the modeling conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Users are encouraged to review the complete model documentation report (https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2012/5187/) to understand the purpose, construction, and limitations of this model. Reconstructing the model archive from the online data release: ------------------------------------------------------------- The model archive is available as a data release from: https://doi.org/10.5066/F70G3J3J The models will run successfully only if the correct directory structure is correctly restored. The model archive is broken into several pieces to reduce the likelihood of download timeouts. Small files (readme.txt and modelgeoref.txt) are available as uncompressed files. All other files are zipped at the subdirectory level. For example, the files in the "georef" subdirectory are zipped into a zip file named "georef.zip". All zip files should be unzipped into a directory with the same name as the zip file name without the .zip extension. The zip files with names starting with "output" should be unzipped in the same manner as other zip files but should be placed within a "output" subdirectory created at the same level as the "georef" subdirectory created from "georef.zip". Running the model(s): -------------------- This archive includes 5 RASA simulations: a steady-state calibration run, RASA-RIO; a transient model run, TRAN_RIO; and three scenario simulations to match the local model scenarios, RASA-FA, RASA_AVG, and RASA_2050. The RASA model does not need to be run to reproduce the simulations listed within the report. Only if changes to the withdrawals in the GEM model were made, would the changes also need to be made to the RASA model. The output from the RASA model would then be incorporated into the local GEM simulations. This archive includes 13 GEM simulations: a no-withdrawal baseline scenario, and 12 scenario simulations: three groundwater withdrawal configurations (average, full-allocation (FA), and 2050 estimated withdrawals) for each of four scenarios (Basic, Interim Adjusted, Conjunctive, and Adjusted Scenarios). The RASA and GEM scenarios are listed individually and briefly described below. Each simulation has a name which has an associated name file used to run the corresponding simulation. When MODFLOW-2000 is executed, a single prompt is issued for the name file that specifies the input files to be used in the simulation and the output files that are created. Responding to the prompt with the name file listed below will initiate the corresponding simulation. The simulations that are documented can be run by opening a command line/terminal in the model subdirectory and typing: ../../bin/mf2k.exe .nam where is one of the name files listed below Summary of the GEM scenarios --------------------------- SUBFOLDER NAME NAME FILE DESCRIPTION OF SIMULATION -------------- --------- -------------------------- No-withdrawal Scenario ---------------------- GEMbase base.nam Transient simulation with no withdrawals. The sensitivity of hydraulic heads and flow to the model parameters was calculated using parameter-estimation software, UCODE-2005 (Poeter and others, 2005). The following provides a brief description of the input and output files from the sensitivity analysis. Because of UCODE processing, all input and output files are located in one directory.
