USGS - WRRI Student Internship Program
Brief Description of the Process Followed to Establish an Internship

1. Sponsoring USGS office completes an Internship Description Form (all but budget page).
2. Ascertain interest of the Institute Director in cooperating with USGS in obtaining an intern. If mutual interest, Director and USGS office complete the budget page of the Internship Description Form. o Budget should include provision for health insurance, immunizations, and safety training if necessary.
3. Director attaches an SF-424 (Application for Federal Assistance) to the Internship Description Form and mails it to Office of Acquisition and Grants, MS 205G, U.S. Geological Survey, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA 20192.
4. USGS office sends requisition for total amount on budget page to Office of Acquisition and Grants, MS 205G, U.S. Geological Survey, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA 20192.
5. Procurement issues an award to the Institute (usually within 30 days of receipt) and the Institute employs the intern.
6. Upon completion of the internship, the intern completes a "Student Evaluation of Internship at the U.S. Geological Survey" and the intern's USGS mentor completes a "U.S. Geological Survey Mentor Evaluation of Student Intern."

Notes

1. Intern may be a student at any college or university in the Institute's state if the Director is willing to cooperate. Student does not necessarily have to be at the institute's host university.
2. The internship can span fiscal years. FY 03 funds could, for example, support a student into FY 04 if funds are obligated and work commences in FY 03.
3. Special arrangements may have to be made if internship is to extend beyond the end date of the Institute's 5-year base grant (currently February 28, 2005).
