Project Summary: Accurate estimates of direct runoff at the regional scale beyond gaged basins are important for water-resources planning and management related to water availability, water quality, and ecology. Water-budget analysis of this new information has the potential to substantially advance understanding of the impacts of humans and climate on groundwater recharge in the State of Hawai'i. The approach and resulting information may be applied to other tropical islands to provide estimates of average runoff-to-rainfall ratios and direct runoff using a minimal level of complexity suitable for regional water resources management needs. Accurate quantification of runoff have been of great interest to users, researchers, and managers of the State's water resources.
