Project Summary: Coastal erosion is a serious problem in the Gulf of Mexico and many other coastal areas in the US. This research will investigate the cost and effectiveness of various marsh construction designs in stabilizing the shoreline in comparison with bulkheads and eroding sediment slopes. The research will quantify additional benefits of the constructed marshes such as enhanced habitat or commercial fish species and filtration of nutrient pollution. The results of this project will be transferable to other US coastal regions because similar cost effective living shorelines designs can be adopted elsewhere.
