Fate, transport, and remediation of PFOS, PFOA, perchlorate, and 1,4-dioxane at the Eastham MA landfill

Institute: Massachusetts
Year Established: 2014 Start Date: 2014-03-01 End Date: 2015-02-28
Total Federal Funds: $5,000 Total Non-Federal Funds: $10,000

Principal Investigators: Chad Vecitis

Project Summary: We propose to sample and analyze leachate from and groundwater near the Eastham MA landfill for perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perchlorate, and 1,4-dioxane. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists these chemicals as contaminants of concern or emerging contaminants that are known or suspected to have serious health effects. After initial site characterization, the fate and transport of these groundwater contaminants will be characterized using the Hydrocarbon Spill Screening Model (HSSM) and novel remediation methods such as using an electrochemical carbon nanotube (CNT) filter as a landfill liner will be evaluated.
