Invertebrate and Aquatic Plant Studies of Two Mesotrophic Lakes in South Dakota

Institute: South Dakota
Year Established: 2004 Start Date: 2004-03-01 End Date: 2006-02-28
Total Federal Funds: $6,000 Total Non-Federal Funds: $12,812

Principal Investigators: David German

Project Summary: Enemy Swim and Pickerel Lakes, located in northeastern South Dakota, are mesotrophic to lower eutrophic lakes, which is relatively rare in South Dakota. Two years of prior study, funded by the USGS 104B Program, has yielded results that show a very diverse invertebrate fauna community. As yet, no published studies exist of invertebrate fauna on either lake. This study will seek to identify the invertebrate communities of these lakes before accidental introduction of exotic species, such as Milfoil, zebra mussels, or the rusty crayfish can negatively impact these lakes.
