Abstract: This project is aimed at studying the hydraulics of complex flows at District flow control structures by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Despite existing rating algorithm works reasonably well for flood control purpose, more accurate and detailed flow parameters need to be estimated for environmental compliance at many critical District sites. Hence, compared with direct point measurement, it is much more efficient to adopt reliable numerical simulation to provide information over the entire flow field. We propose to conduct a comprehensive literature survey on theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on culvert hydraulics, flow through gated culverts, approaching and discharging flows and open-channel gated flow in order to evaluate appropriate CFD model for hydraulic applications and to establish experimental database and scenarios for model validations and benchmark tests.
