An assessment of bottled water withdrawals in the United States

- Abstract: Bottled water is widely used for convenience and personal preference and is important during water supply emergencies when normal drinking water sources are disrupted. However, there is little information at the national scale about source locations and water withdrawals for bottled water. This study by the U.S. Geological Survey is assessing the amount of water withdrawn by bottled water facilities and the source of those withdrawals in order to better understand changes in groundwater levels, springs, and water quality at various spatial scales. The study also aims to develop tools that can be used to estimate potential changes in the future as withdrawals, climate, and socioeconomic conditions change. This presentation will provide an overview of the USGS study and discuss recently published water bottling facility and water use datasets.

Water-Use Data and Research (WUDR) program
The USGS Water-Use Data and Research (WUDR) program provides financial assistance through cooperative agreements with State water resource agencies to improve the availability, quality, compatibility, and delivery of water-use data that is collected or estimated by States.
