Water-data are available in tab-delimited "spreadsheet" format. These files can be directly
imported into spreadsheet computer programs, such as Excel.

Eventually, we will have these types of data files available:
(1) U.S. by state
(2) U.S. by county
(3) U.S. by water-resources cataloging units (8-digit hydrologic unit)
(4) U.S. by water-resources subregion (4-digit hydrologic unit)
(5) U.S. by water-resources region (2-digit hydrologic unit)
(6) Each state by county
(7) Each state by water-resources cataloging units (8-digit hydrologic unit)

(1) Files "usst95" (1995 data), "usst90" (1990 data), and "usst85" (1985 data).
(2) Files "usco95" (1995 data), "usco90" (1990 data), and "usco85" (1985 data).
    These files contain all the counties.
(3) File is "ush895" (1995 data), "ush890" (1990 data).
    Each line in a file is one cataloging unit (HUC-8). Data from the same HUC-8 
    spanning multiple states were summed to create these data records.
(4) File is "ush495" (1995 data), "ush490" (1990 data).
    Each line in a file is one subregion (HUC-4). Data from the same HUC-4 spanning 
    multiple states were summed to create these data records.
(5) File is "ush295" (1995 data), "ush290" (1990 data).
    Each line in a file is one region (HUC-2). Data from the same HUC-2 spanning 
    multiple states were summed to create these data records.
(6) 53 files exist for each year, 1995, 1990, and 1985. For example, "gaco95" for 
    Georgia in 1995.
(7) 53 files exist for each year, 1995, 1990, and 1985 (some). 
    For example, "gah895" for Georgia in 1995.


This file describes the columns of water-use data contained in
the data files.  The first line of each spreadsheet files
contains column descriptors, as shown below.  The column heading
in the spreadsheet files match the "Column heading" in the table
below.  The "Source of the data" indicates how each water-use
data element was derived.  The elements having "Hard coded" as
the source were compiled and entered directly into the data
files.  Elments not "Hard coded" have been computed from those
that were "Hard coded", using the "Index numbers" as stated in
the "Source of the data" column.

All data are expressed in million gallons per day (Mgal/d),
except population values, which are in thousands, per-capita
values, which are in gallons per day (gal/d), and acres
irrigated, which are in thousands.  Number of facilities are in
units.
