D. INSTALLING
Installing GCLAS
----------------
Prior to installation, it is recommended that you remove (or rename the directory
of) any previously-installed version of GCLAS.
To install the software, double-click gclas_install1_05e.jar to execute
the installation program and follow the directions on the screen. If the
installation program does not start when double-clicked, open a command
window in the directory that contains gclas_install1_05e.jar and then type:
java -jar gclas_install1_05e.jar
Follow the installer's instructions to complete the installation. It is possible
to install GCLAS without Administrator rights. The installer does write to
the registry.
By default, the software is installed in the directory
C:\Program Files\USGS\gclas1.05. This is the recommended installation
directory, but you may use other directories or disk drives.
GCLAS directory structure
-------------------------
The following directory structure will be created (the contents of each
directory are shown to the right):
gclas1.05 files NOTICE.TXT and this README.TXT
`-----bin batch file to run GCLAS
`-----data example input data
`-----doc documentation files
`-----help file containing on-line help text
`-----lib class files and software libraries
`-----lib_data constituent library files
`-----user working directory used by GCLAS shortcuts
E. RUNNING THE SOFTWARE
Select the GCLAS shortcut from the Start menu to execute GCLAS. The
Start menu shortcut is found under Programs, in the Program Folder
specified during installation (default: USGS).
See the GETTING STARTED text in the upper right-hand panel of the
GCLAS window and the on-line help for assistance with using GCLAS.
Users with multiple installations of JRE should note that the batch
file executed by the GCLAS shortcuts will execute the first java version
found by the operating system. To execute a different java version,
uncomment and modify as appropriate the lines containing the jrehome
variable in the batch file that executes GCLAS.
Out of environment space error
------------------------------
This error can occur when running GCLAS. The error occurs when there
is insufficient space to hold a new environment variable definition.
You can avoid this error by initiating a new command shell and specifying
how much environment space you need. For example, in an MS-DOS Command
Prompt window, typing
command /e:1024
will initiate a new command shell with 1024 bytes of environment space.
Environment space can be between 256 and 32768 bytes.
The above command will increase the environment space for only the
current Command Prompt window. To permanently increase your environment
space, on Windows 95 and 98 machines, click the MS-DOS icon in the
upper-left corner of the Command Prompt window and select Properties.
Select the Memory tab and increase the value in the Initial
environment field. On Windows NT machines, add the above command to
C:\winnt\system32\config.nt and initiate and use a new MS-DOS Command
Prompt window.
