Photo Contest
The Office of Surface Water is sponsoring a photography contest in conjunction with the USGS National Surface Water Conference and Hydroacoustics Workshop, April 2-6, 2007 in St. Louis, MO. OSW is seeking images that document the occurrence, measurement, and records computation of surface water. The entries will become part of a library of surface water images that can be used in posters, presentations, and reports. Each meeting attendee will receive a CD containing all of the entries.

Eligibility:
Water Science Centers and attendees are invited to submit digital images. Attendance at the meeting is not required for submission of images. For each photographer, a maximum of 8 images may be submitted.
Technical Specifications:
Images may be from a digital camera or may be scanned from traditional print, slide, or negative media. Files must be in either JPEG format or TIF format.
For best results, use the highest quality your digital camera supports. Use the highest density when scanning images. If you have good slides, negatives or prints but do not have access to high-quality scanning equipment, contact Annette Ledford for help with getting your images scanned.
Categories:
All images must be submitted in digital format. Images may be in color or black & white and should accurately represent conditions at the time the images were captured; do not edit, alter or manipulate the images. Digital images may be submitted in the following categories:
- Disasters - Natural and Man-made
- A gage
- Surface-Water-Related Field Work
- Hydroacoustic Activities
- Public Service - Community Outreach & Disaster Response
- Historical images documenting the occurrence, measurement, and records computation of surface water
NOTE: All contemporary images must show proper safety gear and procedures being used.
Copyright:
Images created by government employees as part of their duties are not subject to copyright. Contestants submitting images created outside of official duty are required to grant the U.S. Geological Survey permanent unlimited rights to use the image(s). The USGS may edit, publish, distribute, and republish them in any form. Submission of images constitutes acceptance of these conditions.
Judging:
Judging will be based on how well the subject matter is captured and on the quality of the image. A panel will review all submitted images and select the best in each category. These images will be exhibited in print format at the meeting and attendees will vote to determine the winners.
Awards:
Non-monetary awards will be presented for Best of Show and for the first, second and third place winners in each category. For the Gage category, additional, non-monetary awards will be presented in one or more of the following subcategories:
- a. most scenic
b. least scenic
c. hardest to get to / farthest from the office
d. easiest to get to / closest to the office
e. smallest / tightest fit
f. largest / roomiest
Closing Date:
Entries must be received in Reston, VA by Wednesday, March 7, 2007.
List of Entries and Winners:
Winners will be announced at the meeting and will also be posted on the OSW web pages.
To enter:
- Complete the entry form below (offices are encouraged to consolidate their entries, add additional rows as needed.)
- Copy the entry form and your images to a CD (there should be one entry form for each CD.)
- Mail your CD(s) and a printed copy of the entry form(s) to:
