"Harp" type Fog Collector

"harp"-type fog collector

This collector is a cylinder, 8 inches (20 cm) diameter by 13 inches (33 cm) high, strung with two concentric rows of Teflon monofilament.  There is a rain shield approximately 18 inches (46 cm) diameter over the cylinder (however, this does not keep all rain out of the collector).  The cylinder is mounted approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) off the ground.  The fog droplets collect on the filaments and drain through a funnel into a 10-gallon (38 liter) tank containing a layer of mineral oil to prevent evaporation.  Cumulative monthly samples of fog are collected for isotopic analysis.

The collector is based on the one designed by Falconer and Falconer (1980) but is made of aluminum, rather than plastic.
