Electron acceptors in sediment

When oxygen is used up, respiration continues by dumping electrons (generated through energy production) onto alternative electron acceptors. The distribution of these processes in sediments often form disctinct zones. In surface sediments the size of these zones may be very small, whereas in the subsurface (see below) the zones may be quite large.
