Pond

Problem description

Drawdown in a hypothetical alluvial aquifer evolves from a single production well, eventually causing a solute plume to emanate from a pond and migrate to the well. The irregular, bowl-shaped domain containing the alluvial aquifer measures approximately 1 km across and approximately 60 m deep. The simulation involves transient, fully saturated, constant-density flow and transient solute transport.

This 3D example is described in detail in the release notes for the Pond example problem [1] included in the SUTRA Examples installation file. The latest version of this installation file is available for downloading from the web page for the latest version of SUTRA.

Visualizations

The results shown below were generated using SutraGUI 2D3D.1, SUTRA 2.0 (2D3D.1), and Model Viewer 1.1.

Solute plume. Plot of solute plume after ~23 years of pumping. Concentrations plotted range from 30% (blue) to 100% (red) of the source water concentration. Red dots show specified-pressure nodes on bottom of the pond. Plume emanates from pond and is drawn toward four-node well (not shown) in the bottom-right part of the image. Aquifer shown in oblique view with 5X vertical exaggeration. Animation shows evolution of plume over ~23 years; shaded grid shell omitted to reduce file size. Images generated using Model Viewer.
