Documentation for County Point Source File U.S. Geological Survey Contact: Richard Alexander (email: ralex@usgs.gov) U.S. Geological Survey Reston, VA 20192 Documentation Last Updated: 02/05/98 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Resources for the Future (RFF) Point-Source Data Inventory: Gianessi, L.P. and H.M. Peskin, An Overview of the RFF Environmental Data Inventory: Methods, Sources, and Preliminary Results, Vol. 1, September, 1984, Resources for the Future, Washington, D.C., 111 p. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Method Summary: Point-source estimates are based on a national inventory of discharges from 32,000 facilities, including industries, municipal wastewater treatment plants, and small sanitary waste dischargers for the years 1977-1981. This inventory represents the most recent nationally comprehensive compilation of point-source discharges for the reported chemicals. The original units of the RFF data were converted from daily to annual estimates. The number of days of discharge were assumed to be 365 for municipal treatment plants and 260 for industries. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Constituents (variable name): Flow (FLOW), 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total phosphorus (TOT-P), trace elements (CADMIUM, CHROMIUM, COPPER, LEAD, ARSENIC, IRON, MERCURY, ZINC), oil and grease (OIL), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHLORINATED-HC), and fecal coliforms (FECAL-COLIFORM) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Geographic Identifiers: All records are identified by the state-county FIPS code. State abbreviations and county names corresponding to this code are provided in the file 'fips_nam.txt'. ----------------------------------------------------------------- File Layout: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Municipal point source discharges ----------------------------------------------------------------- File Name: POINTM1.TXT (3,134 county records) Contents: (each field is separated by a blank) Item Width Type N.Dec.
