Aquifer confinement controls nitrate concentrations in aquifers

In the data set overall (top figure) and within individual aquifers (bottom figure) aquifer confinement has an effect on nitrate concentrations. In almost every principal aquifer nitrate concentrations were lower in confined or semiconfined parts of the aquifer than in unconfined parts of the aquifer. The illustration shown is based upon figure 20 of SIR 2008-5240.
