Table 4

Table 4. Agricultural land use in agricultural indicator basins

[Crop group classifications are based on the classification system developed by Gilliom and Thelin (1997). Crop data are derived from the 1992 Census of Agriculture (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1995) and the U.S. Geological Survey Land Use land Cover database (U.S. Geological Survey, 1990). In the crop group codes, upper case letters indicate crops that account for greater than 20 percent of the row crop area in the basin; lower case letters indicate crops that account for greater than 10 percent to 20 percent. C, corn; A, alfalfa; S, soybeans; W, wheat and small grains; P, peanuts; pot, potatoes; COT, cotton; FG, field crop and grass seed; v, vegetables; sor, sorghum; b, dry beans and peas; tob, tobacco; O, site classified on the basis of orchard—vineyard crops rather than row crops; XX, basin not classified because of low row crop and orchard—vineyard area. >, actual value is greater than value shown]
