Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set provides information for evaluation of streamflow loss as mechanism of transport of potential contaminants when assessing sensitivity of ground-water to contamination in Lawrence County, SD. This data set is a result of a larger work (WRIR 00-4103 cited above), which includes a paper plate titled: "Map showing drainage areas upstream from potential streamflow-loss zones and locations of selected streamflow-gaging stations in Lawrence County, [...]

Purpose

This data set was created to provide the location of potential streamflow-loss zones to be used with a data set that describes drainage areas above potential stream-flow zones (see cross-reference information to obtain the drainage area digital data set). Attributes in the loss-zone data set relate the loss zone to respective drainage areas by a site identification number. These two data sets should be used conjunctively with a data set that evaluates sensitivity based on direct infiltration of precipitation (see cross-reference information to obtain the related digital data set) for a complete evaluation of ground-water sensitivity. The intended use of the sensitivity data sets is as a screening tool or preliminary assesment of ground-water sensitivity used in conjunction with other information and analysis. The map is not designed to replace the need for site-specific investigations or to be the sole criterion in making land-use decisions.
