Retrieval Information

Please remember that spatial data files typically are very big! A 28.8K modem, for example, takes about 10 minutes to download a 1 MByte file, even longer if there's network traffic. Plan accordingly.

Multiple files may be joined together by the GNU "tar" utility, tar.exe. These files usually are identified by the "tar" or "tgz" extension.

Shape files typically include at least 3 files: .shp, .shx, and .dbf . You must retrieve all 3 for the shape files to work properly. The files sometimes are combined into a tar file. Shape files often are produced in geographic coordinates (lat/lon) regardless of the original projection. Please see the metadata for more information.
