Facilities at the Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility

The HIF has a number of laboratories and field-testing sites that offer unique capabilities for the evaluation of hydrologic instrumentation and equipment. The hydraulic laboratory is equipped with tanks and flumes that can be used to test instruments under a variety of conditions. The HIF deploys equipment for field evaluations at stations located on the Pearl and Wolf Rivers. In addition the HIF uses a variety of environmental test chambers and a water quality laboratory to quality assure and evaluate instruments and equipment.

	Hydraulic Laboratory The Hydraulic Laboratory is a one-of-a-kind facility within the United States used to test and calibrate hydrologic instruments used in water-resources investigations and to obtain experimental data used in research studies on the mechanics of flow and the transport and dispersion of heat, solutes, and solids in rivers and estuaries. 	Field Testing Locations The HIF maintains several field testing locations. Read more about the HIF Field Testing Location.
	Environmental Chambers The HIF’s Testing Section uses Environmental Chambers to simulate environmental conditions found in the field. Read more about the HIF Environmental Chambers.
	Water Quality Laboratory The water quality lab supports three main functions; QA/QC of newly purchased water quality instruments, maintenance and calibration of all WQ monitors currently in the HIF rental program and the test and evaluation of other commercially available monitors. 	Warehouse The HIF warehouse stocks OVER 1,000 specialty items that are used by USGS personnel in all 50 states to collect hydrologic data. All of the instruments and equipment stocked in the HIF warehouse are subjected to quality-assurance inspections. Read more about the HIF Warehouse.
