SURFACE WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 77.11

Subject: PUBLICATIONS - "Computation of Backwater and Discharge
at Width Constriction of Heavily Vegetated Flood Plain"
          U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigation
          76-129

The subject report describes the results of a 5-year project to
collect data and develop a method to compute backwater and
discharge at width constrictions of heavily vegetated flood
plains. The methods developed work well for the limited data
available. All of the backwater data available in Surface Water
Branch files and collected during the project were used in the
report.

Measured bridge backwater (h1*) is needed for a wide variety of
conditions not limited to wide flood plains. This data would be
used to verify this proposed method and to determine its
limitations. Data collection procedures similar to those
described in the subject report are recommended.

The Regional Surface Water Specialist would appreciate comments
and suggestions on the proposed method.

If additional copies of the subject report are desired, they may
be ordered from NTIS, P.O. Box 1553, Springfield, Virginia 22151.
