OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM 2008.01
SUBJECT: Release of WinRiver II Software (version 2.00) for Computing Streamflow from Acoustic Profiler Data
The purpose of this memorandum is to announce the availability of WinRiver II (version 2.00) for collecting and processing data with Teledyne RD Instruments1 (TRDI) acoustic profilers (Rio Grande, StreamPro, and others). The WinRiver software was developed by TRDI in cooperation with the USGS. Previously issued Office of Surface Water (OSW) Technical memoranda 2000.03, 2002.01, 2002.03, and 2005.04, describe the use of software for computing acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) streamflow measurements and should still be used as guidance.
WinRiver II has a number of enhancements to improve the collection and processing of TRDI ADCP data; the enhancements are:
A summary of changes and system requirements are provided in attachment A, with a detailed description of selected enhancements in attachment B, and known issues in attachment C.
WinRiver II Version 2.00 contains a Section-By-Section (SxS) module that is designed to make ADCP discharge measurements where the ADCP is held stationary at multiple points in a cross section. In order to activate this module, it must be purchased from TRDI. The SxS module has not been tested or reviewed by the OSW. Until testing of the SxS module is completed, we recommend that only the standard “moving boat” portion of the software be used. If use of the SxS module is necessary, the results should be quality assured with comparison measurements or other approaches suggested by OSW personnel. OSW will be glad to assist users willing to test the SxS module.
All USGS users who collect streamflow data using TRDI ADCPs should upgrade to WinRiver II version 2.00 by April 1, 2008. Because there is no automated method for processing WinRiver II data in prior versions of WinRiver, it is recommended that all users in an office switch to WinRiver II simultaneously. Data collected with WinRiver 10.06 does NOT need to be reprocessed with this new version. However, data collected with WinRiver 10.06 can be easily imported into WinRiver II for processing or review. The software is available to USGS personnel who own and use ADCPs manufactured by TRDI at: http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/movingboat/mbd_software.shtml.
To date, OSW has provided WinRiver II training to more than 200 users. OSW will continue to teach the use of WinRiver II in classes and provide Web seminars (Webinar) to ensure a smooth transition to WinRiver II. It is recommended that users of previous versions of WinRiver software attend a Webinar on WinRiver II to fully take advantage of the new features. A review of the detailed documentation integrated in the WinRiver II software will also be helpful.
If you have any questions or comments about the policies and guidance in this memo, please contact Mike Rehmel (firstname.lastname@example.org) or the OSW Hydroacoustics Work Group (email@example.com).
