OFFICE OF WATER QUALITY TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM 97.04

Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Use of Parameter Codes in Annual Data
         Reports

This memorandum revises the guidelines for the annual data report to
allow the use of parameter codes in the column headings in water-quality
tables. The Office of Water Quality (OWQ) encourages the inclusion of
parameter codes in the tables because they are useful to individuals who
want to retrieve electronic files of the data and they are a link to the
long names for the parameters which provide much more information than do
the short names that appear in the column headings. There are often
several parameter codes for the same constituent and users must know what
the code is in order to retrieve the data.

The Office of Water Information will revise their guidelines for
preparation of the annual data report to recommend the inclusion of
parameter codes in water-quality tables for the 1996 water year report
and to require them beginning with the 1997 water year report.

                                David A. Rickert /S/
                                Chief, Office of Water Quality

This memorandum does not supersede any other OWQ Technical Memorandum.
