OFFICE OF GROUND WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 98.01

Subject: Plan for Development of Ground-Water Modeling Software
          in the U.S. Geological Survey

The Office of Ground Water (OGW) has completed a "Plan for
Development of Ground-Water Modeling Software in the U.S.
Geological Survey." The plan was prepared by Arlen Harbaugh,
Dave Pollock, and Tom Reilly with input from many individuals
from the Districts, Regions, National Research Program, and
Yucca Mountain Project. In particular, we are indebted to the
60 participants at the Ground-Water Modeling Workshop held in
Denver, March 18-20, 1997. The ground-water modeling plan and
reports of the workgroups at the Ground-Water Modeling Workshop
can be found at the OGW Home Page (http://water.usgs.gov/usgs/ogw/
ogw/).

We have restricted the scope of the plan to ground-water model
development activities over the next 2-3 years to meet District
needs, although some action items involve planning for longer-
term development. As noted, the plan has been placed on the OGW
Home Page where we intend to make it a living document over the
next couple years by periodic updates and status reports on the
model development activities. Thus, the document is intended to
serve as a vehicle for both planning and communication. Please
provide any comments or questions you might have to Arlen
Harbaugh (email: Harbaugh).
