GROUND WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 75.12
Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Report: Storage of Low Level Radioactive
Wastes in the Ground: Hydrogeologic and
Hydrochemical Factors,
by S. S. Papadopulos and I. J. Winograd--
EPA-520/3-74-009
The report should be called to the attention of persons involved
in pollution studies, land use projects, modeling of flow in
porous media, or mass transport in ground water.
The subject report was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey for
the Office of Radiation Programs of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. Although the Geological Survey was furnished
only a limited number of copies by EPA, we believe the report
should be given wide distribution for the following reasons:
1. Although directed towards land burial of radioactive wastes,
the criteria are applicable also to toxic wastes and, to a
large degree, to all landfills.
2. The discussion of data required to model a site and predict
waste movement shows that today's models can handle only
simple geology and hydrology.
3. The brief review of the mathematical simulation of solute
transport in hydrologic systems is quite current.
4. The report is a very logical analyses of an approach to
landfill siting from the scientific point-of-view.
