GROUND WATER BRANCH MEMORANDUM NO. 57.38

To: District Chiefs and Staff Officials, Ground Water Branch

From: Chief, Ground Water Branch, Washington, D.C.

Subject: Conference on hydrology of volcanics in the western
          States

The conference on hydrology of volcanics in the western States
will be held September 15-21, 1957. Plans include meeting at Twin
Falls, Idaho Sunday afternoon, September 15; traveling from Twin
Falls to Boise, Idaho, September 16; September 17 and 18 will be
spent in Boise, presenting papers on hydrology of volcanic
terranes, and the remainder of the time - September 19 through the
21st - will be spent in reviewing field problems from Boise to
Klamath Falls, Oregon. The field conference should disband
Saturday, the 21st, at Klamath Falls, unless it becomes necessary
to carry over into the 22nd in order to cover all the points of
interest.

Such a traveling conference will necessitate many arrangements for
food, lodging, and transportation. Therefore, each district
sending representatives to this conference should notify Mr.
Mundorff's office, with copy to this office, as to how they plan
to arrive at Twin Falls, and whether or not they will need
transportation for the field trip. Any changes in the plans of
the participants should be forwarded to Mr. Mundorff's office
immediately so that the work of arranging the conference can be
held to a minimum.

Inasmuch as it is planned to use a minimum number of official
vehicles to make the extended field trip, and since the starting
and ending points are about 1,000 miles apart, it will be
necessary for each participant to indicate whether or not he will
be driving a vehicle. In order to hold the number of vehicles to
a minimum it is requested that wives and other nonofficial
visitors not be invited to this conference, and that arrangements
be made beforehand for each car to carry not less than four
passangers.

Those who have plans for giving talks at the conference should
notify Mr. Mundorff's office, with copy to this office, as to the
title and length of time required for each paper. Mr. Mundorff
has suggested that only abbreviated versions of the written
manuscript be presented so as to allow more time for discussion.
If copies of any papers and/or abstracts to be presented are
received in the Washington office before August 5, an attempt will
be made to have them duplicated for distribution at the
conference. This procedure of distribution of papers before
presentation was used with considerable success at the Mammoth
Cave and Carlsbad conferences. Field offices with duplicating
facilities should reproduce their own papers for distribution.
