SWPA_alvbsn is a vector dataset of alluvial-fill basin statistics for the Southwest United States. Statistics for each basin include physical details such as area, landcover, elevation, slope and precipitation. Anthropogenic data for basin include landuse, population, and wateruse.
<purpose>This dataset was created for use by the Southwest Principal Aquifer (SWPA) study to help characterize conceptual models of case studied National Water-Quatlity Assessment (NAWQA) Program alluvial basins as well as the possible natural and anthropogenic factors that may affect water quality.</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is a compilation from many sources, including the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium National Landcover Database, USGS Estimated Use of Water, Oak Ridge National Laboratory LandScan Global Population Database, EROS National Elevation Dataset, Spatial Climate Analysis Service PRISM precipitation data and USGS Hydrogeologic areas.</supplinf>

<attraccr>Because Irrigation type and use data are not consistently available for the entire Southwest, no attempt was made to distribute water according to irrigation type. It is assumed that most agricultural crops in the SW are irrigated. Agricultural acreages, reported in USGS Estimated Use of Water, are taken from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) census of Agriculture. These estimates were used in this analysis rather than NLCD calculations. Census of Agriculture irrigated agricultural acreages are thought to provide a more accurate account of agricultural land use. Water use and acreage were distributed evenly over all NLCD agricultural land in a county. Thus, acreages and water may be distributed to some areas where NLCD agricultural land is misclassified by NLCD or may not be irrigated.

Accuracy of agricultural land cover is assumed to be approximately the same as the NLCD Cultivated land cover, published accuracy estimates for Cultivated Land are 81%/79% (Errors of Omission/Commission).

Disaggregated irrigated agriculture water use estimates were summed for counties and checked for accuracy against USGS county-based estimates.

Population and public supply water use estimates were checked against various municipalities and available estimates.

Due to the lack of large-scale public supply water use spatial data, public supply water was disaggregated over urban areas via per capita use rate. Urban areas are defined as greater than or equal to 386 persons per square kilometer. It is assumed that only and all urban areas use public supply water.

Elevation derivatives are assumed as accurate as source DEMs.

Geology is assumed as accurate as sources state geologic data.
