This dataset is a 100-meter cell resolution raster dataset of estimated use of irrigated agricultural water use data for the southwestern U.S. The dataset was generated from 1:100,000-scale county boundary data, 30-meter 2001 National Land cover database (NLCD), and USGS estimated use of water in the United States in 2000.
			<purpose>This dataset was created for use by the Southwest Principal Aquifer (SWPA) study to help characterize conceptual models of case studied National Water-Qualiity Assessment (NAWQA) Program alluvial basins as well as the possible natural and anthropogenic factors that may affect water quality.</purpose>

		<attracc>
			<attraccr>Because Irrigation type and use data are not consistently available for the entire Southwest, no attempt was made to distribute water according to irrigation type. It is assumed that most agricultural crops in the Southwest are irrigated. Agricultural acreages, reported in USGS Estimated Use of Water, are taken from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) census of Agriculture. These estimates were used in this analysis rather than NLCD calculations. Census of Agriculture irrigated agricultural acreages are thought to provide a more accurate account of agricultural land use. Water use and acreage were distributed evenly over all NLCD agricultural land in a county. Thus, acreages and water may be distributed to some areas where NLCD agricultural land is misclassified by NLCD or may not be irrigated.

Accuracy of agricultural land cover is assumed to be approximately the same as the NLCD Cultivated land cover, published accuracy estimates for Cultivated Land are 81%/79% (Errors of Omission/Commission)(Homer and others, 2004).

Disaggregated irrigated agriculture water use estimates were summed for counties and checked for accuracy against USGS county-based estimates.</attraccr>
