Zones in this data set represent spatially contiguous areas that influence ground-water flow in the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system (DVRFS), an approximately 45,000 square-kilometer region of southern Nevada and California. The zones typically represent areas of differing material properties; however, they may also represent spatially similar areas, such as areas of similar infiltration rates. Material properties, such as horizontal hydraulic conductivity, vertical anisotropy, or storage characteristics may vary within a single hydrogeologic unit and be represented by numerous zones; or they may be the same for multiple hydrogeologic units and be represented by a single zone. The DVRFS zones were typically derived from geological or hydrological analyses by Sweetkind and others (2004) and Faunt and others (2004) and were used as input in the DVRFS transient ground-water flow model, a regional-scale model developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support investigations at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and at Yucca Mountain, Nevada (see "Larger Work Citation", Chapter A, page 8, for details).
			<purpose>Material property zones were used to develop input files to MODFLOW-2000; the USGS 3D finite-difference code used to simulate ground-water flow in the DVRFS.</purpose>
			<supplinf>The material property zone data set is one of many layers in a geospatial database supporting the USGS DVRFS project. During this 5-year (1998-2004) project the USGS, in cooperation with DOE and other Federal, State, and local agencies, developed this geospatial database for a regional-scale, 3D hydrogeologic framework model (HFM) and a ground-water flow model. The models are intended to address water-resource issues and the potential movement of radioactive material from the Nevada Test Site and the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Data from two previous ground-water flow models of the greater Death Valley region (see Larger Work Citation, Chapter A, p. 7) were the foundation of the DVRFS geospatial database. These and other data were reexamined through a series of regional-scale hydrologic investigations to provide updated and spatially consistent interpretations for the DVRFS study. In some cases, new data were collected to augment the existing information. Data compiled from the studies include natural ground-water discharge occurring through evapotranspiration and spring flow; ground-water pumping for the period 1913-98; ground-water recharge simulated as net infiltration; ground-water inflow and outflow at lateral model boundaries; hydraulic conductivity and its relation to depth and other rock properties; and the estimation of water levels representative of prepumped and pumped conditions in the region. Digital elevation models, geologic maps, borehole information, cross sections, and other 3D models were used to develop the HFM which represents the geometry of 27 hydrogeologic units and structural features. The resulting geospatial database supports characterization and conceptualization of the DVRFS, construction of 3D hydrogeologic framework and ground-water flow models, and visualization of analysis and model results.</supplinf>

			<attraccr>Attributes in this data set were derived from zone arrays used in the DVRFS transient ground-water flow model. Because zones can represent material property variations within a single hydrogeologic unit, or multiple hydrogeologic units with similar material properties, zone attribute values can repeat or may be skipped. Nonetheless, attribute values accurately reflect the values used in the numerical flow model and were checked routinely by inspection using queries, hardcopy printouts, and visually using a GIS. In addition, attributes were checked and evaluated as part of the review process associated with the publication of the source report (Larger Work Citation).</attraccr>

			<procstep>
				<procdesc>This data set is a compilation of the final zone arrays used in the DVRFS ground-water flow model. To develop this data set, the ASCII zone arrays from the MODFLOW-2000 archived model input files (ftp://ftpregmod.wr.usgs.gov/DVRFS_2004_SIR-5205/archive_model_tr.zip) were converted to ArcGIS raster grids. The ArcGIS raster grids were converted to a polygon layer. The polygons in this layer represent the spatial extent of each flow model cell. Each of the cells is attributed with the column and row of the model cell. In addition, the attribute zone number, description, and parameter name was added for each MODFLOW-2000 zone array. Originally, Sweetkind and others (2004) and Faunt and others (2004) defined spatially distinct areas (or zones) thought to have similar geological and/or hydrological properties. These zones have a hierarchical structure so if the model indicated sensitivity to a given zone or group of zones, the zone could be split into the next order of the hierarchical structure. In other parts of the model domain, a paucity of hydrologic information resulted in the original spatially distinct zones being combined (or lumped) into a more general zone. As a result, numerical values assigned to specific zones may repeat or may be skipped. Therefore, a brief description of each zone is included. Parameter names associated with zones used in the numerical flow model are also included in the attribute description.</procdesc>

		<overview>
			<eaover>Each zone polygon feature has 18 attributes. Two attributes are automatically generated by the GIS (FID, Shape) for internal software purposes. The remaining attributes were assigned by the author (Citation Originator) for analysis and for developing input files for the DVRFS numerical ground-water flow model. Because zones can represent material property variations within a single hydrogeologic unit, or multiple hydrogeologic units with similar material properties, zone attribute values can repeat or may be skipped. Nonetheless, attribute values accurately reflect the values used in the numerical flow model.</eaover>
