<descript>
This digital geospatial data set consists of contours of lines of equal apparent thickness of the Veremjo Formation, the interval between the tops of the Vermejo Formation and the Trinidad Sandstone, in Las Animas County, Colorado. The U.S. Geological Survey developed this data set as part of a cooperative project with the Colorado Water Conservation Board. Sources and interpretation of the data that were used to prepare this map are described in Scientific Investigation Report 2006-5129 (Watts, 2006).
<purpose>This data set was created to display the generalized apparent thickness of the Vermejo Formation (the interval between the tops of the Vermejo Formation and Trinidad Sandstone) in Las Animas County, Colorado.</purpose>

<procdesc>The input data set (sir-06-5129_formation_tops_point) was screened to select locations where depths to the top surfaces of both the Trinidad Sandstone and Vermejo Formation were greater than zero (0) feet; the calculated thickness of the Vermejo Formation was greater than zero (0) feet; and the absolute value of the datum error (datum_err attribute in sir-06-5129_formation_tops_point) was less than 25 feet or the datum error was not defined (datum_err = -9999). The apparent thickness of the Vermejo Formation, the isoKv attribute in sir-06-5129_formation_tops_point, at its contact with the Poison Canyon Formation was assigned a value of 296.6 feet, which is equal to the mean value of the apparent thickness of the Vermejo Formation at gas wells, or was assigned a value of zero (0) feet at the contact of the Vermejo Formation with the Trinidad Sandstone. The locations of the contacts of the Vermejo Formation with the Poison Canyon Formation and with the Trinidad Sandstone were interpolated from the geologic map of the Trinidad quadrangle (Johnson, 1969).</procdesc>

A geostatistical model of the apparent thickness of the Veremjo Formation was generated using the using the Geostatistcal Analyst extension. The Geostatistical Analyst model (raster data) of thickness of the Trinidad Sandstone was created using Ordinary Kriging. The input points, the Z value, was set to the isoKv attribute in sir-06-5129_formation_tops_point.

The geostatistical model of the apparent thickness of the Veremjo Formation was run with the following parameters: Selected Method: Ordinary Kriging Output: Prediction Map Number of datasets in use: 1 Number of Points: 904 Order of Trend Removal: First (Estimated by Global Polynomial Interpolation) Ratio global to local drift: 1:0 Semivariogram/Covariance: Model: 6128.5*Gaussian(42104)+3121.2*Nugget Error modeling: Microstructure: 3121.2 (100%) Measurement error: 0 (0%) Searching Neighborhood: Neighbors to Include: 5 or at least 2 for each angular sector Searching Ellipse: Angle: 0 Major Semiaxis: 42104 Minor Semiaxis: 42104 Angular Sectors: 4 Lag: 3600 Number of lags: 12

The model fit (prediction error statistics) of the geostatistical model of the apparent thickness of the Vermejo Formation were: Mean: -0.5079 Root-Mean-Square: 64.49 Average Standard Error: 57.58 Mean Standardized: -0.01032 Root-Mean-Square Standardized: 1.103
