This dataset consists of reported depths to and calculated altitudes of selected geologic contacts, and calculated apparent thicknesses of selected hydrostratigraphic units, in the Raton Basin, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, southeastern Colorado.
<purpose>This dataset consists of reported depths to and calculated altitudes of selected geologic contacts, and calculated apparent thicknesses of selected hydrostratigraphic units, in the Raton Basin, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, southeastern Colorado. It primarily was developed from data compiled from the database of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission but also includes the altitudes of selected contact surfaces that were interpolated from the geologic map of the Trinidad quadrangle (Johnson, 1969). These data were used to prepare maps of the altitude of the bottom and top of the Trinidad Sandstone, and the tops of the Veremjo and Raton Formations, and of the apparent thicknesses of the Trinidad Sandstone and Vermejo and Raton Formations. This dataset includes hydrostratigraphic data for Huerfano County and Las Animas Counties, Colorado; however associated structural and thickness contours derived from these data are limited to the part of the Raton Basin in Las Animas County, Colorado.</purpose>

<logic>Data were validated with live queries of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation on-line database at URL http://www.oil-gas.state.co.us/COGIS/LiveQuery.html, on a well by well basis. Reported depths to selected hydrostratigraphic units were screened to assure stratigraphic succession. Reported altitudes of land surface at oil and gas wells were compared with interpolated altitudes of land surface at the oil and gas wells. Interpolated altitudes of the land surface at oil and gas wells were based on the National Elevation Dataset (NED), generally at resolution of one-third Arc-second. If the reported and interpolated land-surface altitude of oil and gas wells differed by more than 25 feet, the hydrostratigraphic data were not used in geostatistical models of the tops of the Trinidad Sandstone and Raton Formation or of the apparent thicknesses of the Trinidad Sandstone and Vermejo Formation.</logic>
<complete>This dataset includes reported depths to and computed altitudes of contact surfaces of selected hydrostratigraphic units, including: the Cuchara, Poison Canyon, Raton and Vermejo Formations, Trinidad Sandstone, and Pierre Shale, in Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, Colorado. This dataset also includes calculated apparent thicknesses of selected hydrostratigraphic units. The dataset is inclusive of data available on and before December 31, 2005.</complete>
