<descript>
This data set describes springs issuing from the Arikaree aquifer or overlying alluvium that were used to create a map of the generalized potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. All data were retrived from the U.S. Geological Survey's NWISWeb database at http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/sd/nwis/.
<purpose>This data set was created as part of a project to map the potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey began working in cooperation with the Oglala Sioux Tribe to develop a potentiometric map of the Arikaree aquifer in Jackson and Shannon counties. In 2003, the study area was expanded to include Bennett County.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data set was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey publications. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata files for completeness and accuracy.

Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ESRI ArcInfo Coverage specific terminology.</supplinf>

<attrdef>This is a unique number given to each spring. STATIONID is a combination of the latitude and longitude of the spring, plus a sequential number for springs located at the same latitude and longitude. (NOTE: The latitudes or longitudes originally assigned to sites in the USGS's Ground-Water Site Inventory (GWSI) database occasionally are determined to be incorrect. In these cases, the latitude or longitude is corrected, but the station identification numbers remains unchanged. Thus, the latitude or longitude for a site may not correspond exactly with the STATIONID.)</attrdef>
