<descript>
This data set describes observation wells completed in the Arikaree aquifer that were used to create a map of the generalized potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. The observation wells are owned by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Water levels in the wells were measured by staff of the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The water-level data for this data set are based on the average of measured values for the well from completion through 2005. The range in water-level data for this data set was from 1977 to 2005. All water levels were retrieved from the U.S. Geological Survey's NWISWeb database at http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/sd/nwis/gwlevels.
<purpose>This data set was created as part of a project to map the potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey began working in cooperation with the Oglala Sioux Tribe to develop a potentiometric map of the Arikaree aquifer in Jackson and Shannon counties. In 2003, the study area was expanded to include Bennett County.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data set was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey publications. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata files for completeness and accuracy.

Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ESRI ArcInfo Coverage specific terminology.</supplinf>

<procstep>
<procdesc>This product is the digital version of the observation wells depicted on sheet 1 of Scientific Investigations Map 2993.

STEP 1: Data were retrieved from the USGS Ground-Water Site Inventory database and pulled into a spreadsheet for calculation of some attribute data.

STEP 2: An ARC/INFO coverage was created using the "createpoint" command.

STEP 3: Hydraulic head was calculated by subtracting the water level from the land surface altitude of the well. The average water level and hydraulic head for each well was determined by averaging all values from the well. The ancillary data for the observation wells were published online in March 2008 as supplementary data (Excel spreadsheet) for Scientific Investigations Map 2993 at http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/2993/.</procdesc>

<attrdef>This is a unique number given to each well. STATIONID is a combination of the latitude and longitude of the well, plus a sequence number for wells located at the same latitude and longitude. (NOTE: The latitudes or longitudes orginally assigned to sites in the USGS's Ground-Water Site Inventory (GWSI) occasionally are determined to be incorrect. In these cases, the latitude or longitude is corrected, but the station identification number remains undchanged. <attrdef>The LOCAL number is based on the Federal land-survey system for western South Dakota. LOCAL consists of the township number followed by "N" (north of the Black Hills Meridian), the range number followed by "W" (west of the Black Hills Meridian), and the section number, followed by a maximum of four uppercase letters that indicate, respectively, the 160-, 40-, 10-, and 2.5-acre tract in which the site is located. These letters are assigned in a counterclockwise direction beginning with the letter "A" for the northeast quarter. A serial number following the last letter is used to distinguish between wells located in the same 2.5-acre tract.</attrdef>
