<descript>
This data set shows the ground-water flow lines for the Arikaree aquifer that were used to create a map of the generalized potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquife rin the Pine Ridge Indian Reseration and Bennett County.
<purpose>This data set was created as part of a project to map the potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey began working in cooperation with the Oglala Sioux Tribe to develop a potentiometric map of the Arikaree aquifer in Jackson and Shannon counties. In 2003, the study area was expanded to include Bennett County.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data set was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey publications. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata files for completeness and accuracy.

Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ESRI ArcInfo Coverage specific terminology.</supplinf>

<procdesc>This product is the digital version of the lines showing the general direction of ground-water flow that were depicted on sheet 1 of Scientific Investigations Map 2993.

STEP 1: The coverage of the water-table contours copied to a new coverage, then all the existing contours in the new coverage were deleted.

STEP 2: In ARCEDIT, the coverage of the water-table contours was brought up on the screen as a background coverage.

STEP 3: New lines were created by manually digitizing ground-water flow lines perpendicular to the water-table contours using the screen.

STEP 4: The coverage was built as a line coverage.</procdesc>
