<descript>
This data set describes the area within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where the Arikaree aquifer (Arikaree Formation) is absent. This absent area includes areas where the Arikaree Formation has been eroded and where outcrops of geologic units older than the Arikaree Formation are present at the land surface.
<purpose>This data set was created as part of a project to map the potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey began working in cooperation with the Oglala Sioux Tribe to develop a potentiometric map of the Arikaree aquifer in Jackson and Shannon counties. In 2003, the study area was expanded to include Bennett County.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data set was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey publications. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata files for completeness and accuracy.

Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ESRI ArcInfo Coverage specific terminology.</supplinf>

<procdesc>This product is the digital version of the area where the Arikaree aquifer is absent depicted on sheet 1 of Scientific Investigations Map 2993.

STEP 1: The map by Ellis and Adolphson (1971) was digitized by the U.S. Geological Survey using a digitizing tablet. The following geologic units were digitized: Qfa (flood-plain alluvium), Qta (terrace alluvium), Qwd (windblown sand deposits), Qot (old terrace deposits), To (Ogallala Formation), Ta (Arikaree Formation), Twr (White River Group), Kp (Pierre Shale), Kn (Niorbrara Formation), and Kc (Carlile Shale).

STEP 2: Polygons of the geologic units that are older than the Arikaree Formation (White River Group, Pierre Shale, Niobrara Formation, and Carlile Shale) were merged together.

STEP 3: Polygons of alluvial deposits that overlie geologic units older than the Arikaree Formation (White River Group, Pierre Shale, Niobrar Formation, and Carlile Shale) were split into two polygons by adding an arc at the interpolated underlying boundary between the older geologic unit and the outrcrop of the Arikaree Formation and then rebuilding the coverage as a polygon coverage. The split alluvial polygons that represent the alluvial deposits overlying formations older than the Arikaree Formation were merged with the polygons of the older geologic units to form polygon areas where the Arikaree Formation is absent.</procdesc>
