<descript>
Septic systems are useful for removing and processing human waste. However, they have the potential of leaking or discharging waste into the nearby system and increasing potential contamination of nearby streams. Data represent potential locations of septic sewers in the Pacific Northwest based on extrapolation of 1990 Census tract block group level information.
<purpose>This data set represents the distribution of septic sewer locations in the Pacific Northwest. The number of septic systems was based on 1990 US Census counts by census tract block group. Point locations were generated and randomly distributed across each census tract block group.</purpose>

<procdesc>U.S. Census Bureau spatial and tabular data were collected for the entire United States. Tabular data was joined to Census tract block group shapefile boundaries based on tract and blkgrp number. This populated the attribute table with additional variables including number of septic sewer systems by block group.</procdesc>
<srcused>USGB90</srcused>
<srcused>USPOP90</srcused>
<procdate>2008</procdate>
</procstep>
<procstep>
<procdesc>Census tract block groups that intersected the MRB7 (Pacific Northwest) study area were filtered from the remaining national Census block groups for the rest of the country. The INTERSECT option was chosen over CLIP to retain full unit extents, rather than clip to the MRB7 basin extend.</procdesc>
<procdate>2008</procdate>
</procstep>
<procstep>
<procdesc>Next, the attribute "SEW_SEPT" (number of septic sewers for each block group) was used as the input variable to generate a separate point shapefile with equal amount of points per block extent. For example, if tract "X" had 152 septic systems reported in its block group, then 152 points were generated and randomly distributed within that block extent. The ArcGIS extension Hawth's Tools (HTOOL) was used to populate random points based on attribute value using the "generate random points tool." For each group, the corresponding number of points, by septic system, were generated and distributed. This was completed for all block groups within the study area.</procdesc>
<srcused>HTOOL</srcused>
<procdate>2008</procdate>
</procstep>
<procstep>
<procdesc>The septic system point shapefile was then intersected with MRB7 catchments to attribute each point with a corresponding MRB7 catchment number (MRB_ID). The attribute table was then adjusted and reduced, leaving only pertinent census tract, block group, and MRB_ID data.</procdesc>
