This is a point coverage of dams in the United States and Puerto
Rico, which originally was derived from the national inventory of
dams data base (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1982). The coverage
includes locations of and selected characteristics of approximately
2,700 reservoirs and controlled natural lakes that have normal
capacities of at least 5,000 acre-feet or maximum capacities of at
least 25,000 acre-feet and that were completed as of January 1,
1988.
			</abstract>
<purpose>This coverage is intended as a thematic data layer showing
the location of dams and certain attributes of the structures.

Information contained in the coverage has been used for several
applications. Location, size, and owner of structures are
depicted on a map of surface-water development (Hitt, 1985).
Location and other selected characteristics of structures are
listed in table 3 of Ruddy and Hitt (1990).

The information was the basis for graphics in two National
Water Summary reports. The 1985 National Water Summary shows
maps of surface-water development. The 1987 National Water
Summary shows graphs of cumulative reservoir storage.
			</purpose>
			<supplinf>Reviews applied to data.

The reviews applied to data for the USGS coverage of dams and
reservoirs is described in detail on pages 2-4 of Ruddy and Hitt
(1990).

The information in this coverage has been reviewed by field
personnel several times. The file initially was reviewed and
verified as part of the compilation of the map of surface-water
development (Hitt, 1985). USGS District Offices, nine other Federal
agencies, and five State agencies reviewed the location, owner, and
size of structures under their jurisdiction. These early reviews
occurred between 1981 and 1984.

Additional reviews of the file were made by USGS District Offices
during the preparation of the State articles for the 1985 and 1987
National Water Summary reports (U.S. Geological Survey, 1986,
1990). During these reviews by the USGS District Offices, data on
the normal and maximum capacities were corrected as necessary by
the reviewing offices.

<procdesc>The source of data for the USGS coverage of dams and reservoirs
is described in detail on pages 2-4 of Ruddy and Hitt (1990).

In 1981, USGS undertook a project to map surface-water development
in the United States. USGS adopted the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers national inventory of dams (1982) as the source of
information for the map. USGS selected about 2,700 structures
from the Corps file and transferred selected attributes about
the structures to its own file. Information in the USGS file
underwent several reviews (see below).

The digital data file was converted to ARC/INFO format in 1983.
(The actual coverage was not used in publishing the map of water
development.) The ARC/INFO GENERATE command was applied to the
latitude/longitude values in the tabular digital file to create a
point coverage. Then the attributes were joined to the point attribute
table.

The file was enhanced by adding information on surface area,
drainage area, storage ratios, accounting unit, and cataloging
unit.

Selected characteristics of large reservoirs contained in the
coverage were published in Ruddy and Hitt (1990). This report, the
map of surface-water development, and the digital coverage
complement each other.

		<overview>
<eaover>Most of the attributes were transferred directly from fields in the
national inventory of dams (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1982).
Some attributes were added to reclassify items into broad
categories that were easier to process while preparing the map of
surface-water development. Several attributes were added for
programming or documentation purposes and a few were added
to expand the database. Most of the attributes are explained
on pages 13-16 of Ruddy and Hitt (1990).

The attributes that were added to reclassify items into broad
ategories are: OWNERCODE, SIZECODE, SURFACODE, STORATCODE.
The codes listed in these attributes are explained in suppporting
tables: RESERVOIR.OWNERCODES, RESERVOIR.SIZECODES,
RESERVOIR.SURFACODES, RESERVOIR.STORATCODES. (See section 7.)

The attributes that were added for programming are: STLINE,
ALTST, and ALTID. These fields were used in calculating
cumulative reservoir storage for the 1985 National Water
Summary. SOURCE and REV were added for documentation. The
RESERVOIR.SOURCECODES table explains the SOURCE codes.

The attributes that were added to expand the database were SURFAREA,
DRAINAREA, STORAT, water resources accounting unit (HUC4), and
water resources cataloging unit (HUC).

Latitude and longitude were not maintained in the original ARC/INFO
coverage because ARC/INFO keeps track of the locations automatically.
However, many people requesting the data wanted latitude/longitude.
The coverage was PROJECTED to the geographic system, and latitude/
longitude values were obtained by the ARC/INFO UNGENERATE command.

Codes for PURP (purpose) are:

>C FLOOD CONTROL
>
>D DEBRIS CONTROL
>
>H HYDROELECTRIC
>
>I IRRIGATION
>
>N NAVIGATION
>
>O OTHER
>
>P STOCK/FARM POND
>
>R RECREATION
>
>S WATER SUPPLY
