Red alder (Alnus rubra) are a common component of forests in Western Oregon and Washington. This file provides an estimate of red alder basal area in western Oregon and Washington for each incremental catchment of the USGS Pacific Northwest SPARROW model.
 <purpose>This data set was developed to estimate the contribution of red alder to the in-stream total nitrogen load for the USGS Pacific Northwest SPARROW model. Red alder has been shown to be related to nitrogen fixing (Tree Species Compendium, 2011), an important factor in the SPARROW model.</purpose>

 <procdesc>Downloaded a draft version of the GNN forest composition model map for western Washington from the LEMMA project FTP site. Draft version was provided to me by LEMMA project scientist, Matt Gregory. Accessed September 8, 2008. File for model area (gnn_wwa) was separated and distributed as 5 ESRI ArcGIS rasters (mr6_sppba, mr7_sppba, mr8_sppba, mr9_sppba, gnn_wwa).</procdesc>

 <procdesc>
Extracted the item containing the red alder basal area density (in square meters per hectare) from each grid using the following commands:

setwindow <ingrid> <ingrid>
setcell <ingrid>
<outgrid> = <ingrid>.alru2

where:
<ingrid> = mr6_sppba, mr7_sppba, mr8_sppba, mr9_sppba, gnn_wwa

I repeated the above processing steps for each of the source grids, resulting in 5 new grids containing just the red alder basal area density.
</procdesc>
 <procdate>20080827</procdate>
 </procstep>
 <procstep>
 <procdesc>
Ran zonal statistics to sum the red alder basal area density for each incremental catchment in the SPARROW model.

<outgrid> = zonalstats(mrb7cat_grd, <ingrid>, sum)

where:
<ingrid> = the five <outgrid> files produced in step 3.
mrb7cat_grd = an ArcGIS grid of the incremental catchments of the model that was generated by converting the incremental catchments shapefile provided to us by the National SPARROW modeling team.

I repeated the above processing step for each <outgrid> generated in step 3.
</procdesc>
 <procdate>20080827</procdate>
 </procstep>
 <procstep>
 <procdesc>Converted the 5 INFO files generated by the zonalstats function in step 4 to .dbf files using the export command in ArcCatalog.</procdesc>

 <procdesc>Copied the "VALUE" and "SUM" field from each .dbf file generated in step 5 into a Microsoft Excel workbook. Each unique VALUE corresponds to the unique identification number for the incremental catchments in the SPARROW model. For each unique "VALUE", I summed the basal area density from each "SUM" field of the five files generated in step 5. The summed basal area densities were converted to an area by multiplying the value by the area of a grid cell (0.09 ha)."</procdesc>
 <procdate>20080827</procdate>
 </procstep>
 <procstep>
 <procdesc>
The summed basal area densities were converted into a basal area per incremental catchment by multiplying the summed density by 0.09, which was derived from the grid cell size of 30 meters and a units conversion factor.

basal area in an incremental catchment (m2) = sum of basal area density (m2/hectare) from step 6 x 1 ha/10,000m2 x 900 m2/grid cell
</procdesc>
 <procdate>20080827</procdate>

 <procdesc>The basal area in an incremental catchment was converted into a catchment density by dividing the values calculated in step 7 by the incremental catchment area, in square kilometers.</procdesc>
