Surficial geology for the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain was compiled and interpreted from available published and unpublished sources. Formation contacts were interpolated across unmapped areas and inconsistencies in nomenclature, interpretation, and scale were resolved to the extent possible. For more information, see U. S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1680.
<purpose>This data set was developed as part of the process for creating a regional hydrogeologic framework to examine the primary natural physical factors that affect the flow and chemistry of shallow ground water and small streams in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. It was used as a basis for determining the primary texture of surficial sediments, which was used in combination with regional physiography to delineate seven hydrogeologic subregions.</purpose>
