City locations for all places in the TIGER files; this file
was extracted from dbf files posted on the internet
by the Bureau of the Census. This is basically a gazeteer
of place names used in the 1990 census, with population and
locations included.

City, places, population, 1990
			</abstract>
			<purpose>This coverage should be useful for labeling city locations
on national or local maps.

Publication graphics where point locations of cities are needed.
The main use of this data in plotting would be to select
points by population and label those points with
the city name. For example, in ARCPLOT:
RESELECT PLACES POINT MAPEX
RESELECT PLACES POINT POP100 gt 50000
POINTS PLACES
POINTTEXT PLACES NAME

The file was retrieved from
<URL:file://ftp.census.gov/pub/tiger/pub/tiger/pts/geoex.zip>
and the resulting DBF files were read into ARC/INFO. The following
documentation was provided and is included here.

> geoex.zip is a compressed file containing 51 GEOEXxx.DBF files
> where xx represents a state abbreviation.
> Download the file to your hard disk and use PKUNZIP to uncompress.

>     Total record length         150

This file was then read into INFO using the DBASEINFO command.
Some of the state data files generated error reports, but no
data seem to be missing in the final product. (see notes)

The INFO files were then aggregated and lat and long were
dumped to a file using TABLES UNLOAD.
The resultant file was then reformatted into
ARC GENERATE format, and GENERATE was used to make point
coverage. The attributes were then added using JOINITEM, and
the data were PROJECTed into standard CONUS Albers coordinates.

More detail is included (with some AMLs and awk scripts) under
"notes" below.

Revisions:

1.0 10/27/95 Generated this coverage from scratch, keeping
all attributes.
