<abstract>
This dataset includes information for 220 pesticides on the
average amount (pounds) applied to 87 agricultural crops and
the acres of crops treated for counties within the conterminous
United States. These data were derived by combining published
state pesticide use coefficients published by the National
Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) and county
harvested crop acres available from the 1997 Census of Agriculture.
A description of the methods used to develop the county datbase
is published in USGS OFR 00-250, "Method for Estimating Pesticide Use"
and is available from: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/pubs/of/ofr00250.
Maps showing the geographic distribution of use for 219 compounds
(BT was not mapped) are available from http://ca.water.usgs.gov/pnsp/.
The pesticide use estimates represent average usage patterns
for the years 1995-1998 and do not represent a specific year.
Key limitations of the data include: (1) state use coefficients
represent an average for the entire state and consequently
do not reflect the local variability of pesticide management
practices found within states and counties, (2) pesticide use
estimates are not for a specific year, but represent typical
use patterns for a four year period, (3) state pesticide
use coefficients may not have been available for all states
where a pesticide may have been applied to agricultural land
and therefore are not included, and (4) the county crop acreage
is based on the 1997 Census of Agriculture and may not represent
all crop acreage due to Census nondisclosure rules.

 <purpose>
These data are useful for estimating pesticide use by
crop and compound at National, state and regional scales.

County estimates for 220 compounds and 87 crops are based
on information released in November 2000 by the National
Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP). NCFAP
assembled over 244 pesticide use reports for specific
crops, state, and pesticides that represent average
annual pesticide application rates. Use coefficients
are avaiable for cropland only and do not include
greenhouse, livestock, ornamental plant and post-harvest
application nor information on the use of rodenticides
or animal repellants. The 1997 National Pesticide Use
Database does not include the same compounds reported
in the 1992 version of the database because of changes in
pesticide usage due to the introduction of new compounds and
the phase-out of others. The 1997 estimates of pesticide
use on pastureland and fallow land are based on crop
acreage from the Census of Agriculture while the 1992
pesticide use estimates were based on crop acreage from
other sources. A report, "Pesticide Use in U.S. Crop
Production: 1997," details the methods used to create
the database and references for the use coefficients
are available online:

http://www.ncfap.org/ncfap/nationalsummary1997.pdf

The National database of state use-coefficients is available
for download at:

http://www.ncfap.org/database/default.php

The USGS Pesticide National Synthesis Project (PNSP) applied
NCFAP state pesticide coefficients to 1997 Census of Agriculture
county harvest crop acreage to develop a database of county
estimates of pesticide use for 220 compounds and 87 crops.
The USGS county pesticide use database contains 531,194
records. Each record is a unique combination of a pesticide,
crop, and county. Each record includes state and county FIPS code,
state name, county name, pesticide name, pesticide type, crop name
1997 Census of Agriculture county crop acres,
the estimated average annual pounds applied in the county,
and the acres treated for each county. Note, records for
BT include information on the number of acres treated
and not pounds applied because BT is a microorganism rather
than a chemical compound. A description of the methods
used to develop the county database is published in
USGS OFR 00-250, "Method for Estimating Pesticide Use"
and is available online from:
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/pubs/ofr/ofr00250

State pesticide use-coefficients were applied to county harvested
crop acreage obtained from the 1997 Census of Agriculture for
the crops listed. For some crops, the Census reports
several categories of a crop, such as "sorghum for grain,"
"sorghum for dry forage," and "sorghum for silage."
In these cases, the crop acreages were added together to
produce total sorghum acreage. Please refer to OFR 000-250
for a description of crops that include multiple
crop acreages.

State use coefficients were developed by Leonard Gianessi
and Monica B. Marcelli National Center for Food and
Agricultural Policty (NCFAP) from 244 pesticide use
reports published by USDA, California Department of Pesticide
Regulation (CA-DPR) and others. Gail Thelin,
USGS Pesticide National Synthesis Project, produced the
county database of pesticide use using NCFAP state
pesticide use coefficients and 1997 Census of Agriculture
county harvested crop acres.

State use coefficients
obtained from the CD-ROM were cross-checked
with use coefficients published by NCFAP and
available online from:

Census crop acres in the county data file were
compared with published numbers available from
published Census reports including AC97-A-5,
Volume 1, Geographic Area Series, Part 5.

County data for each compound was summed to the state-
level and compared with state totals provided by NCFAP.
Some minor differences exist and it was determined
that differences were due to Census non-disclosure
rules for some county crop acreages.

 <procdesc>
Processing steps are detailed in OFR-000250 and are
summarized here. State pesticide use-coefficients were
obtained as an ACCESS database on a PC-compatiable CD-ROM
from NCFAP. The ACCESS database was exported as a text
file and imported into ARC/INFO using the IMPORT command.
The resulting INFO table contained 17,102 records. Each record
included the state name, pesticide name, pesticide type,
crop name, state acres, percent of acres treated, application
rate, pounds applied, acres treated and the source of the use
coefficient.
County crop acreage was retrieved from the 1997 Census of
Agriculture for all crops contained in NCFAP state database.
Some use coefficients were applied to several types of the same
crop, for example pesticide treatments on blueberries included
both tame and wild blueberries, therefore blueberry acreage for
both types of blueberries were summed and pesticide applications
to blueberries includes both tame and wild blueberries.
An ARC aml was written to apply the use coefficient for
each crop and compound to county crop acreages. The county file
of pesticide use contains 531,194 records.
The final INFO table is available as a compressed export INFO file.
