This data set consists of digital county boundaries for
Oklahoma. The boundaries were derived from U.S. Geological
Survey 1:100,000-scale Digital Line Graph data sets. Two
attributes are associated with each county polygon. The first is
the FIPS code and the second is the county name.
			</abstract>
<purpose>This data set was developed to provide a standard set of county
boundaries for state agencies and public use.
			</purpose>
			<supplinf>Reviews Applied to Data--

The Digital Atlas of Oklahoma was reviewed by 13 technical
reviewers. Because of the large volume of data (nearly 1.3
million points, lines, or polygons divided into 861 separate
data sets) the reviewers could not thoroughly check the accuracy
of all geographic features. Reviewers were asked to check the
topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and
statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers
were asked to check the metadata and other documentation files
for completeness and accuracy. Users should exercise caution and
judgment in applying these data, and be aware that errors may be
present in any or all of the digital map data layers.

<procdesc>The 1:100,000-scale DLG boundary files were downloaded by
anonymous ftp, ftp://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/DLG/100K . The
directories are organized alphabetically by quadrangle name.
The DLG data sets are located in the 'boundary' subdirectory.

The 416 files were unblocked and converted to an ARC/INFO
(ESRI, 1995) file format. Major and minor code pairs were
added. The data sets were combined using the ARC/INFO command
APPEND (ESRI, 1995). Attributes containing the state code and
a county FIPS code were added. The data sets were edited so
only polygons with a major and minor code combination of 91
and 40 (polygons within Oklahoma) remained. The county FIPS
code was calculated. The data sets were processed with the
ARC/INFO command CLEAN (ESRI, 1995). The ARC/INFO command
DISSOLVE (ESRI, 1995) was used with the county FIPS code to
delete unwanted boundaries. The data sets were combined into
three data sets, based upon Universal Transverse Mercator grid
zones using the ARC/INFO command APPEND (ESRI, 1995). The
ARC/INFO command DISSOLVE (ESRI, 1995) was used with the
county FIPS code to delete unwanted boundaries. The data sets
were projected to the current projection. The ARC/INFO
command APPEND (ESRI, 1995) was used to combine the data sets
and the ARC/INFO command CLEAN (ESRI, 1995) was used with a
fuzzy tolerance of 10 meters. The ARC/INFO command DISSOLVE
(ESRI, 1995) was used with the county FIPS code to create one
polygon for each county.

A small portion of the state boundary was manually digitized
from the 1:100,000-scale paper map, U.S. Geological Survey
topographic quadrangle, Wichita Falls, Texas.

<eaover>Each county polygon has two attributes. The first attribute,
FIPS, is a unique five-digit code used to identify the county.
The first two numbers of the FIPS code is 40 for Oklahoma. The

The attributes, COUNTY and FIPS, in the DLG version are stored
in the associated file COUNTY.DBF. This file is in a dBASE
format and can be appended to the polygon attributes using
software compatible with the dBASE format. The item COUNTY_ is
stored in the first major code (MAJOR1) and the item COUNTY_ID
is stored in the first minor code (MINOR1). Either item may be
used as the link when joining COUNTY.DBF with the polygon
attributes.

The last three digits of the attribute FIPS are stored in the
second major code (MAJOR2). The second minor code (MINOR2) is
equal to 0.
