This tabular data set represents basin characteristics for the year 2002 compiled for every MRB_E2RF1 catchment of selected Major River Basins (MRBs, Crawford and others, 2006). These characteristics are reach catchment shape index, stream density, sinuosity, mean elevation, mean slope and number of road-stream crossings. The source data sets are based on a modified version of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) RF1_2 and include enhancements to support national and regional-scale surface-water quality modeling (Nolan and others, 2002; Brakebill and others, 2011) and the U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER/Line Files (U.S. Census Bureau,2006).

The MRB_E2RF1 catchments are based on a modified version of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) ERF1_2 and include enhancements to support national and regional-scale surface-water quality modeling (Nolan and others, 2002; Brakebill and others, 2011).

Data were compiled for every MRB_E2RF1 catchment for the conterminous United States covering New England and Mid-Atlantic (MRB1), South Atlantic-Gulf and Tennessee (MRB2), the Great Lakes, Ohio, Upper Mississippi, and Souris-Red-Rainy (MRB3), the Missouri (MRB4), the Lower Mississippi, Arkansas-White-Red, and Texas-Gulf (MRB5), the Rio Grande, Colorado, and the Great basin (MRB6), the Pacific Northwest (MRB7) river basins, and California (MRB8).
<purpose>This tabular data set was created and used by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specifically to estimate basin characteristics per watershed segment in the application of the national SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model . The SPARROW model relates in-stream water-quality measurements to spatially referenced characteristics of watersheds, including contaminant sources and factors influencing terrestrial and stream transport. The model empirically estimates the origin and fate of contaminants in streams, and quantifies uncertainties in these estimates based on model coefficient error and unexplained variability in the observed data. For more information on the USGS SPARROW model please refer to: <http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa/sparrow/intro/intro.html.></purpose>

<procdesc>Stream density was calculated by taking the reach length (in meters) and dividing it by catchment area ( in square meters) ( John Brakebill, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 2008).

Sinuosity was calculated by taking the reach length (in meters) and dividing it by its straight line length (in meters). Straight line length is measured from the beginning node of a reach to the end node of the reach.

Mean reach catchment elevation was calculated with the following steps:
1) Acquired elevation data in 100-meter format from USGS ( John Brakebill, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 2008).

2) Summarized the mean elevation by catchment using the ZONALMEAN command in GRID.

3) Exported results into a dbf file format.

Mean slope in percent and degrees was calculated with the following steps:
1) Aquired elevation data in 100-meter format from USGS ( John Brakebill, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 2008).

2) Used the SLOPE command in GRID to calculate slope in both degrees and percent

3) Summarized the mean slope by catchment using the ZONALMEAN command in GRID.

4) Exported results into a dbf file format.

Number of road crossings per reach was calculated by intersecting the road coverage with the modified RF1 stream coverage and summing the intersections.

BSI was calculated by dividing the catchment area (square meters) by the catchment perimeter (meters) squared ( James Falcone, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 2007).</procdesc>
