Generalized lithology (rock type) and physiography based on
geologic formations were used to characterize hydrgeomorphic
regions (HGMR) within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. These
HGMRs were used in conjunction with existing data to assess
the significance of ground-water discharge as a source of
nitrate load to nontidal streams in the Chesapeake Bay
watershed (Bachman and others, 1998). This work is part of
the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Chesapeake Bay initative
to develop an understanding and provide scientific
information for the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and
its watershed (Phillips and Caughron, 1997).
 </abstract>
<purpose>This data set was used to compare base-flow and ground-water
nitrate loads to assess the significance of ground-water
discharge as a source of nitrate load to nontidal streams in
the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata
file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form,
as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some
ARC/INFO-specific terminology.

The HGMR data set is the result of combining digital data sets
of physiography and rock type from numerous sources. This
supplemental_information section describes the creation of the
physiographic and rock type data sets (Langland and others,
1995) used to create the HGMR data set. Specific processes
regarding the creation of the HGMR data set can be found in the
data_quality_information section of this metadata.

Physiography and Lithology

Digital data sets of physiographic provinces and rock types were
assembled by grouping and generalizing geologic formation
boundaries from existing geologic and physiographic digital
data sets based on State geologic maps within the Chesapeake
Bay drainage area. For areas in the Bay drainage where digital
data did not exist, State geologic maps were digitzed and
attributed with a geologic formation abbreviation. A large part
of the digital geology used to create this data set was
compiled by the USGS Appalachian-Piedmont Regional Aquifer
Systems Analysis (APRASA) study (Swain & others, 1991; Mesko,
1992).

The physiographic province determination is based on the
geologic formations within each state. In some instances,
discrepancies in geologic formations occur along the State
boundaries. These discrepancies will also occur in the
physiographic and rock type data sets. Each polygon was
attributed with an abbreviation for either a particular
physiographic province or section.

Valid values
APPL - Appalachian Plateau Province
APMN - Appalachian Mountain Section
GV - Great Valley Section
BR - Blue Ridge Province
RP - Reading Prong Section
MELO - Mesozoic Lowlands Section
PDLO - Piedmont Lowland Section
PDUP - Piedmont Upland Section
CP - Coastal Plain Province

A spatial dissolve was performed using the ArcInfo DISSOLVE
command on the polygon attribute that contained the
physiographic abbreviation. The result was a digital data set
of physiographic provinves in the Chesapeake Bay drainage area.

Rock type determination (similar lithologic and geologic
characteristics) was also based on the State geologic maps
and the descriptive information about each geologic formation.
Each geologic formation polygon was coded with an abbreviation
for rock type. Rock types included the composition of Carbonate
(C), Silicate (N), Crystalline (X), and Unconsolidated
Sediment (S).

A spatial dissolve was performed using the ArcInfo DISSOLVE
command on the polygon attribute that contained the rock
type addreviation. The result was a digital data set of rock
type in the Chesapeake Bay region.

All existing digital geologic and physiographic data sets
collected within the Chesapeake Bay Drainage Basin were
received in the ArcInfo export file format.

A Chesapeake Bay drainage boundary was created using the
GIRAS 1:250,000-scale hydrologic unit digital data set and
used as the boundary extent for the data sets.

The specific documentation for each State geologic or
physiographic digital data set resides with the individual
State. In some cases, there is no documentation for the
creation of the digital data set, only a reference to the
base map.

Physiographic Province or Rock Type digital data sets were
not reviewed (Langland and others, 1995).

The Reading Prong area of Pennsylvania was not provincially
differentiated in the physiography data, however, as noted by
Fenneman (1938, p. 368), "Almost all that has been said about the
topography and the geomorphic history of the Blue Ridge is true
of the Reading Prong." Therefore, polygons in this area that were
tagged as "VR" and "PD" provincially, were tagged as a "BR" HGMR
in the data set (Harlow and Nelms, 1998).

representing the combinations of rock type and
physiography determined the HGMR classification
(Bachman, 1997). All possible combinations were not
included in a HGMR classification because they did not
occur, were not mapped on the source maps, or were not

unconsolidated alluvial deposits and glacial deposits
found in the Valley and Ridge and Appalachian Plateau

> Listed below is a table generated to cross-reference polygons
> by state and formation into HGMR classifications. Except for
> HGMR, these attributes are not maintained in this data set.
> The Lithology column represents what was originally coded
> when rock type was determined. The HGMR column represents
> what is currently in the attributed item HGMR in the data set.
> The HGMR attribute reflects any corrections made to the
> data set during the detailed testing processing step
> (Harlow and Nelms, 1998).
