During 2008, the U.S. Geological Survey and other agencies made approximately 2,500 water-level measurements in the Mojave River and Morongo groundwater basins. These data document recent conditions and, when compared with previous data, changes in groundwater levels. A water-level contour map was drawn using data from about 700 wells, providing coverage for most of the basins. Twenty-four hydrographs show long-term (up to 70 years) water-level conditions throughout the basins, and 9 short-term (1997 to 2008) hydrographs show the effects of recharge and discharge along the Mojave River. In addition, a water-level-change map was compiled to compare 2006 and 2008 water levels throughout the basins. (575 wells)
<purpose>This data set is a digital representation of the 2008 contours presented on the map published by Stamos, C.L., McPherson, K.R., Sneed, Michelle, and Brandt, J.T., Water-level and land-subsidence studies in the Mojave River and the Morongo Groundwater Basins (2008), Southwestern Mojave Desert, California, U.S. Geological Survey SIR 2007-5097, unpaginated. [Available on the World Wide Web at http://pubs.usgs.gov/sir20075097]. This report, first published in 2007, was updated to include data for 2008.</purpose>
<supplinf>The Mojave River and the Morongo Groundwater Basins are in the Mojave Desert region. The rapid growth in population in these basins, which is due, in part, to their proximity to Los Angeles, has increased the demand for water. Increased pumping to meet the needs of an increasing resident population has resulted in groundwater overdraft in parts of the groundwater basin (Stamos & others 2007).</supplinf>
