This data set consists of digital water-table contours for the Mojave River Basin. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Mojave Water Agency, constructed a water-table map of the Mojave River ground-water basin for ground-water levels measured in November 1992. Water-level data were collected from approximately 300 wells to construct the contours. The water-table contours were digitized from the paper map which was published at a scale of 1:125,000. The contour interval ranges from 3,200 to 1,600 feet above sea level.
<purpose>This data set is a digital representation of the contours presented on the map published in 1995, "Data and water-table map of the Mojave River ground-water basin, San Bernardino County, California, November 1992", by Christine L. Stamos and Steven K. Predmore, U.S. Geological Survey WRIR 95-4148, and make the data available for use with geographic information systems.</purpose>
<supplinf>The Mojave River Basin is located about 80 mi northeast of Los Angeles, California. The proximity of the Mojave River Basin to the highly urbanized Los Angeles region has led to a rapid growth population and, consequently, an increase in the demand for water. The Mojave River, which is the primary source of surface water to the region, normally is dry -- with the exception of a few reaches of perennial flow, and periods of flow following intense storms. The intermittent availability of surface water has forced the region to rely almost entirely on ground water to meet its agricultural and municipal needs (Stamos and Predmore 1995).</supplinf>
