The digital data set delineates the outer boundary of each major discharge area evaluated as part of the study. These areas were used to refine estimates of ground-water discharge throughout the Death Valley regional flow system. As delineated, boundaries include all phreatophytic vegetation and moist soil areas within a discharge area. The boundaries were used to focus efforts associated with classifying the different vegetation and soil conditions within a discharge area.
The digital data set was developed to help classify the different vegetation and soil conditions to the major discharge areas of the Death Valley regional flow system.
Introduction
The digital data set was created in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. The data set was created as part of a study to refine current estimates of ground-water discharge from the major discharge areas of the Death Valley regional flow system. The data set defines the boundary of each of the major discharge areas evaluated during the study. Boundaries initially were delineated from a preliminary vegetation index based on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, and later were refined on the basis of observations made during numerous field visits.
Reviews
The digital data set has gone through a multi-level, quality-control process to ensure that the data are a reasonable representation of discharge-area boundaries. Reviewers were asked to check metadata and other documentation files for completeness and accuracy. Reviewers also were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, projections, and geographic extent.
