Description:

Abstract:

The digital data set delineates the outer boundary of each major discharge area evaluated as part of the study. These areas were used to refine estimates of ground-water discharge throughout the Death Valley regional flow system. As delineated, boundaries include all phreatophytic vegetation and moist soil areas within a discharge area. The boundaries were used to focus efforts associated with classifying the different vegetation and soil conditions within a discharge area.

Purpose:

The digital data set was developed to help classify the different vegetation and soil conditions to the major discharge areas of the Death Valley regional flow system.

Supplemental_Information:

Introduction

The digital data set was created in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. The data set was created as part of a study to refine current estimates of ground-water discharge from the major discharge areas of the Death Valley regional flow system. The data set defines the boundary of each of the major discharge areas evaluated during the study. Boundaries initially were delineated from a preliminary vegetation index based on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, and later were refined on the basis of observations made during numerous field visits.

Reviews

The digital data set has gone through a multi-level, quality-control process to ensure that the data are a reasonable representation of discharge-area boundaries. Reviewers were asked to check metadata and other documentation files for completeness and accuracy. Reviewers also were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, projections, and geographic extent.

Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal accuracy is variable and dependent on how the boundary was mapped and the discretion of the researcher(s) who located the boundary. Where the boundary was mapped using a Global Positioning System (GPS), the accuracy is equal to that of the GPS unit. The unit used was a Precision Light-weight GPS Receiver (PLGR). Where the boundary was mapped on the basis of a preliminary vegetation index, the accuracy is as good as the resolution of the source imagery (about 30 meters). Multiple visual checks were performed to verify that boundaries are positioned as generally intended.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
Boundaries initially were located from a preliminary vegetation map. The map was constructed from TM imagery acquired June 13, 1992. Results were transferred onto 1:24,000-scale maps. Boundaries were drawn and digitized accordingly. Initial boundary locations were refined from information gathered in the field. Refinements often included the acquisition of GPS coordinates. In general, boundary locations are considered accurate to about 50 meters of the location desired by the researcher.
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 50 meters

Process_Description:
Boundaries representing the outer extent of phreatophytic vegetation were drawn on the basis of a preliminary vegetation index developed from TM imagery acquired June 13, 1992. Boundary locations were refined and adjusted to better represent ET units. Refinements were based on information obtained from numerous field visits. Boundary coordinates were checked periodically with a GPS receiver. The refinement process continued until the boundaries were considered reasonable for the discharge areas of interest.
